In Case You Missed It: New CEO Thorsten Heins of RIM, maker of BlackBerry, video announcement this week didn’t show well with investors, the media or fans of BlackBerry. They didn’t respond to RIM’s message or unfortunately, the messenger, Mr. Heins. The seasoned technology pro, did not seem prepared or ready for his “close up.” You can check out his video taped message for yourself on YouTube: http://youtu.be/QUFwhpcrCTw

Some of the media descriptions generated less than favorable reviews: meandering, halting, slow and monotonous. Ouch! Where’s the good news? Ah, these challenges are fixable. And who doesn’t want to see themselves improve?

If you’re a professional, get coaching and be thoroughly prepared before you get in front of the camera for your Website videos, Youtube or media interviews. Your family and friends know you and love you the way you are. People’s first introduction to you in front of a camera including reporters, investors, analysts, clients, potential clients, decision makers and buyers want to see a confident, professional looking, talking and acting pro.

If you want to improve brand awareness and build positive buzz in the media and with your online video presence, preparation will help you project confidence, position your expertise, become more influential, win clients and customers and the public’s opinion. We will be starting a new “Video Tips and Techniques” series next week to help you win “favorable reviews.”

We’re three weeks into 2012. Are you still rejuvenated and motivated to make those changes and reach the goals that looked so desirable on January 1? Experts tell us that most of us don’t keep our resolutions for even a week.

I don’t make resolutions often, however, every New Year, my mind dances with personal and professional plans and goals. They still look realistic because I’m working on them every day… and the year is young.

Here’s how it works for me. December is a month of reflection even with the distractions of the busy Holiday season vying for time and attention. When the New Year rings in, I can be found walking on a beach thinking and planning. I walk to become focused and centered. A new journal awaits an imagination set free to roam with new beginnings.

Gratitude tops of the list. To continue to become more grateful for every gift of life.

No need to take you through everyone of my goals and plans, but there is one more I want to share with you. This year, 2012, my next book will be written. Complete. So there. It’s on record with you. In December I committed, out loud, to a good friend that the proposal will be written by Feb. 10th. At the time, my confident, “It will be written,” statement seemed like more than a reasonable time frame.

“Know thy self.” For me, self knowledge is key to accomplishment. There’s nothing as motivating as the combination of a time frame, a commitment and…a deadline to keep focused. Try it, or whatever it takes to make your 2012 a year of fulfilled goals and plans.

OK, have to go now. I’ve got a book to write!

Who doesn’t know you need video on your Website and Social Media Networks? Let me make a correction, professional video to build your brand, generate new business and position your expertise for the Media? Most corporations jumped on the video wagon early on to build business, sell product and increase revenue. Many entrepreneurs, professionals and service providers are just now catching on to the value of video. Yep, like the Internet, it’s here to stay.

Don’t worry! It’s not too late. Now is the best time to stand out with your video. Cisco projects within three years every business will have video on their sites to gain visibility and Search Engine Optimization. The days of static Website brochures are over. No graphic or visual will ever be as compelling as you.

In the visual world we live in, people want to see you and hear you. Next to showing up in person, video is your strongest form of communication and marketing skill. It is a powerful tool to introduce yourself to potential new business, remind former clients they need you, motivate your employees, position your expertise and help the media track you for interviews.

In the Startegic Studios Video Technique series you will learn skills to help improve your online videos. Here we go! First tip, don’t try this at home. Your video needs to look as professional as you are.

The challenges that hold most people back include the lack of confidence, strategy, messaging, how to get a professionally produced video and the skill it takes to appear comfortable and conversational in front of a TV camera. Now that’s a problem. Not many people can master the art of communicating and connecting with viewers while standing in front of the camera talking about themselves. We don’t want anyone to confuse the art of connective communication with talking.

Media coverage is part of your personal branding. If you aren’t building buzz in the media you are missing out on one of fastest strategies to make you and your brand known or to position your expertise.

One of the questions you might be asking is what does the media look for in a guest? You’re excited, right? You can’t wait to get in front of a TV camera, reporter or microphone to talk about your information, story, news, products, services or book, yes? No, not so fast. It doesn’t guarantee the media will jump on it because you think your subject is the best idea since computers. They are looking for guests who have information with news, solutions or entertainment value to share with their readers, viewers and listeners.

First consideration: The audience. What news value will you bring or how will your interview help them? If you can answer these questions, you’re more likely to get booked. Check out www.MediaStarPower.com for more tips and FAQs about the media and interviews.

Stay tuned!

…a thousand positive responses! Maybe not a quite thousand. What we know for sure is 2010 came to a “colorful” wrap for Startegic Studios. The Los Angeles Business Journal included this photo in their 2010 Year In Review of LA’s interesting personalities. We were featured along with with people from billionaire, Patrick Soon-Shiong to Stan Lee, co-created of Spider-Man fame. Every image captured attention. Not one photo is a typical headshot or the standard behind the desk shot.

When LABJ wrote the article about Startegic Studios, announcing our website TV interviews, we invited the photographer to come to our studio, rather than our office. We set up the cameras, and brought in our videographer to help showcase our service. Along with LABJ’s ace photographer, Ringo Chiu’s expertise, “Wow! The photo created stand-out attention.”

From a branding position, to develop a first of mind go-to impression, consider the visuals you use on your brochure, website or marketing materials. Questions you want to answer:

What are your photos conveying?

Do they look like everyone else?

Are they helping you tell your story?

Do they capture attention?

Are they unique unto you?

We live in a visual world. Draw people in to take a look.

Stay tuned for more Startegic Branding strategies!

One look at LA’s downtown skyline and you know “The Times They Are a-Changin.’” Staples Center, home to the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Kings, led the way. With the addition of LA Live, the new Ritz Carlton and J.W. Marriott hotels, downtown LA has a brand new vibe.

What’s impressive about Mr. Lieweke’s leadership and the behemoth AEG, they’ve accomplished what naysayers said, impossible, it can’t be done. No wonder their vision is a reality given AEG’s success record and bankroll. Plus Mr. Leiweke’s leadership, drive, passion and determination. What you get is a winning combination.

When he delivers a speech, he’s into it. Direct, motivational and irreverent enough to show his likable personality.

Influence is about emotion. Show some, connect with your audience, let them get an insight to who you are and don’t make it too hard for them to like you. You’ll be amazed how it can turn your visions into successful realities.

Kudos to Christiane, she’s a pro!

I can’t think of one star in business, film, television, sports or politics who doesn’t experience anxiety before a performance, a new audience or delivering a speech. The challenge is knowing how to use it to your advantage.

If you’re like the majority of people I coach or have interviewed, you might get nervous or anxious, too. For most novices, “opening jitters” are a distraction, but a “pro” doesn’t want to be without ‘em! For me, it is an adrenaline rush just before stepping in front of a TV camera or for a live audience. Think of it as “show time.” The extra excitement can add the right edge to your presentation. It helps bring up the energy and your performance. And make no mistake, even executives need to get into performance mode if they want to connect with their audience.

Gold Star Actions: What can you do to overcome “the jitters?” Don’t fight your anxiety, instead, use it to your advantage to help you get excited about what your audience is going to receive from you. Prepare what you want to say. This is one of the biggest fears; people are afraid they will misspeak or make a fool of themselves. If you are well prepared, you can cover any mistake and keep moving…your audience won’t pick up on it. Stop telling yourself how nervous you are, so are most people. Tell yourself you have a message to deliver and you are excited to be the one delivering it.

Start strong with your message. Keep in mind, audiences, clients or even your staff members, form impressions in those first few seconds. Clients, in almost every presentation workshop announce, “I’m okay after a few minutes.” Too late, the audience has left the building!

Many people who are driven to distraction with the “deer-in-the headlight” fright in front of an audience, are generally focusing on themselves. Worrying about how they’re coming across. Turn it around and focus on the audience, it takes the pressure off you. Finally, practice, breathe and savor your moment!

It is not unusual to romanticize a dearly departed loved one. What is different about Coach Wooden, are the accolades, praise and honors he received while living.

People who knew him, from his former players, to coaches, fans and friends, couldn’t refrain from beating the drum for this coach at every opportunity. No one ever spoke of him without reverence; it was unanimous. The world experienced a love affair with John Wooden. Maybe because he loved humanity with his whole heart. There is little more that can be written about the coach dubbed the ”Wizard of Westwood.” My personal glimpse is a summary of an extraordinary life: Coach, Contributor, Leader, Teacher, and Humanitarian.

A few years ago, I was fortunate to emcee an event featuring the Coach and Andy Hill, co-author of their book Be Quick—But Don’t Hurry, as the keynote speakers. Listening to him share his life philosophy was all the motivation needed to ask to interview him for an association’s famous speaker’s series. Equally impressive, the coach then on the road to 94 years old, was on the speaking circuit.

A few weeks after the event, I was sitting beside him at his home in Encino, California, gaining insights to the qualities that made John Wooden. Not only a championship coach, he was a man with lasting positive influences on his former players, audiences, fans and anyone he touched personally. His inspirational messages can be found in any of the 8 books he authored. To hear how he wanted to be remembered in his own words, click on our podcast. Even if you didn’t know him, listening to an excerpt from our interview as he expresses his life’s philosophy, you will feel as though you did.

His “Do the best that you can do,” attitude attributed to his star making qualities. His ethics, integrity and character made him a star, although his humility didn’t allow him to think of himself in such a manner. His sense of what’s right was not just something he preached, he lived it. In today’s world, as CEOs, politicians, athletes and entertainers crumble when they say one thing and deceive the public, fans and voters with their actions, John Wooden stood out as a man of honesty and integrity.

He loved life and people, but no one more than Nell, his cherished wife of 53 years. He loved teaching, humanity and helping people develop the best of themselves. His inspirational leadership encouraged others to do the right thing and contribute their best effort. He taught and lived his beliefs both on and off the basketball court. For Andy Hill and many players, he became a father figure, the most affectionate tribute of all. Coach Wooden will continue to inspire us through his books and the contributions he made to humanity. Who ever coined the phrase, “We won’t see of the likes of him again,” must have been thinking of John Wooden.
